Your Marrakech to Fes desert adventure begins with an early morning departure at 7:00 AM. Journey through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest road pass in North Africa at 2,260 meters. Stop at panoramic viewpoints to capture breathtaking mountain scenery and visit a traditional argan oil cooperative to learn about this uniquely Moroccan product. Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous kasbah and a popular filming location for Hollywood productions including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Explore the ancient fortified village with its stunning mud-brick architecture. After lunch, drive through Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert” and home to Atlas Film Studios. Continue through the Valley of Roses, famous for its rose water production, and journey along the scenic Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Arrive in the beautiful Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations including the famous “Monkey Fingers.” Check into your hotel or guesthouse for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, continue your journey through the stunning Dades Gorge, stopping at the spectacular viewpoint overlooking the winding road and dramatic canyon. Drive to Todra Gorge, one of Morocco’s most magnificent natural wonders, where towering limestone cliffs rise up to 300 meters on either side of a narrow canyon. Take time to walk through the gorge and admire the sheer rock walls. Continue through Berber villages and palm groves to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops and as the gateway to the Sahara. Pass through Rissani, an ancient caravan town with a traditional souk. Arrive in Merzouga at the edge of the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes. Meet your camel caravan and embark on a magical camel trek across the golden sand dunes to reach your desert camp. Stop atop a high dune to witness the spectacular sunset over the Sahara. Arrive at your traditional Berber camp where you’ll enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner accompanied by Berber music around the campfire. Sleep under a blanket of stars in comfortable nomad tents, experiencing the peaceful silence of the desert.
Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, watching as the first rays of light paint the sand in brilliant shades of orange and gold. After breakfast at the camp, ride your camels back to Merzouga village. Begin your journey north toward Fes, traveling through dramatically changing landscapes. Pass through the scenic Ziz Valley with its fortified ksours and massive palm groves, one of the largest oases in Morocco. Continue through Errachidia and stop in Midelt, known as the “apple capital,” for lunch. Journey through the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through the Tizi n’Talghamt pass. Stop at Azrou Cedar Forest to see the famous Barbary macaques (monkeys) in their natural habitat among ancient cedar trees. Visit the charming alpine town of Ifrane, often called “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its European-style architecture, clean streets, and cool climate. Continue through the scenic Middle Atlas landscape before arriving in Fes, Morocco’s oldest imperial city and spiritual capital, in the late afternoon or early evening.
